President Nicușor Dan urged the parliamentary parties to resume dialogue to put an end to the political crisis, warning that snap elections and prolonging uncertainty are not in the citizens’ interest. The statement was made on Wednesday evening, in an interview given to Antena 3, at the end of his visit to New York.
The head of state said that he had not observed enough political dialogue in recent months and maintained that the crisis could be resolved only through an agreement between the parties. Nicușor Dan specified that dissolving Parliament is not an option he wants, as it would prolong the period of uncertainty by several months.
The president avoided detailing the scenarios he would consider if the Government proposed by designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan does not receive the vote of confidence. He said that, for the time being, the ten-day deadline during which the designated prime minister must form the government team and secure political support must be respected.
"I urge the parties—for it is a serious matter, after all—I urge the parties to engage in dialogue. We have hardly seen it in recent months. Dissolving Parliament is not something I would want. This means a few additional months of uncertainty, and I believe that Romanians... whenever you are a politician, you try to do what citizens want, and citizens at this moment want this crisis to end in one way or another, and that way can only be one negotiated by the parties. Snap elections are bad first and foremost for citizens, and afterward for the parties as well. When you are a politician, you have to look at what citizens want. There is a sense of insecurity, and I believe it is time to put an end to this crisis," Nicușor Dan said in an interview given to Antena 3 on Wednesday evening, at the end of his visit to New York.
