At the Regional Court in Innsbruck, new truck drivers from Romania and Hungary are being judged for embezzling over 500,000 euros in diesel, which they allegedly replaced with water to conceal the theft. The accusations are based on video recordings capturing the transfer of fuel into private vehicles. In front of the court, the defendants cited financial difficulties, mentioning the low wages in their home countries. To mask the thefts, the drivers allegedly refilled the truck tanks with water after emptying them. They also contest the amounts of fuel attributed to them, including the accusation of embezzling 90,000 liters. The court has imposed suspended prison sentences of up to nine months and ordered the reimbursement of damages of up to 117,000 euros per person, but the verdict is not final. The affected company does not verify the fuel receipts, relying on the trust placed in the drivers.
