Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO, visited Bucharest, where he emphasized the Alliance's commitment to defend every inch of allied territory, including Romania. Rutte stated that, in the event of an attack, the other 31 NATO countries would intervene to defend Romania, thus highlighting the importance of this country within the alliance.
He mentioned that Romania invests in collective security and that NATO invests in Romania, referring to the Eastern Sentinel program, dedicated to defending the eastern flank. Regarding the withdrawal of American troops, Rutte assured that the U.S. commitments to NATO remain unchanged and that the forces deployed in Romania will be increased from 1,500 to over 5,000 soldiers, to allow for a rapid response to any threat. The President of Romania, Nicușor Dan, also supported the unity of the Alliance, rejecting the idea of a split between North and South.
