A man was shot with less-lethal ammunition by police on Saturday, October 10, in an apartment in Bucharest, after attacking with a knife an officer who was trying to restrain him. The incident followed a report that the man had sent his former wife a message threatening to harm himself.
Officers from Precinct 13 went to the reported address, but the man refused to open the door or cooperate. Support was requested from the Bucharest Police Special Actions Service, which deployed an assault team and negotiators.
The negotiator attempted to de-escalate the situation and persuade him to open the door. After the man repeatedly refused, police decided to enter the apartment. At that moment, he attacked one of the officers with a knife and failed to comply with orders.
To stop the attack, an officer fired one round of less-lethal rubber ammunition. The man was wounded in the abdomen, restrained and taken to hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening.
Investigations are being continued by the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Bucharest Sector 3 District Court and officers from Precinct 13, in a criminal case concerning assault on a public official.
