in an interview with G4Media.ro, the head of the European Prosecutor's Office, Laura Codruța Kovesi, stated that she will not 'categorically' enter politics after her term ends in October. Kovesi mentioned that the attacks against her have become frequent since her name was associated with the leadership of certain institutions in Romania. She emphasized that the speculations regarding a candidacy for the presidency or other political positions are accompanied by accusations of abuses, which she said are made without evidence. Kovesi criticized the way national governments evade investigations by the European Prosecutor's Office, shifting projects from European funds to national funds or opening national investigations to block European inquiries. In the interview, she highlighted the need to maintain an independent judiciary, pointing out the challenges encountered in this endeavor.
"On the contrary, ordinary people, when they met me, most of them, thanked me for my work. Most of them told me that if I were to run, they would vote for me, and I said no, I will not run. I clarified. So somehow you get feedback from honest and sincere people. So when people who have been convicted and have served prison sentences come out to attack me, to say things about me, I really don't care. I just finished an interview last week, in which I said that I will not enter politics. I thought I was very convincing and again, this morning I saw that there are rumors about Kovesi and who is making her party. So, I will definitely not enter politics. Exactly what am I going to do? I don't have an answer at this moment." Kovesi stated in an interview for G4Media.ro.
