The police officer who fatally struck 21-year-old Andrei Ionescu and seriously injured his girlfriend was sentenced on Thursday to 4 years and 4 months in prison by the Brașov District Court. The decision is not final.
The accident occurred on November 30, 2024, at around 8:13 p.m., on a street in Poiana Brașov. According to the case file, the police officer was under the influence of alcohol and entered a street without obeying the “No Entry” sign, hitting the two young people. As a result of the impact, Andrei Ionescu died, while the young woman was seriously injured.
The court also ordered the payment of €300,000 in moral damages to the victim’s family. Attorney Adrian Cuculis, quoted by Agerpres, announced that he would challenge the ruling, which he considers too lenient given the seriousness of the acts.
The defense attorney noted that the victim’s father, former pilot Șerban Ionescu, protested outside the Brașov District Court. He also criticized the fact that the defendant was released from the preventive measure after the request to extend his pretrial detention was filed late.
