The Senate has adopted a bill that requires companies to calculate invoices in lei at the official BNR exchange rate from the day before issuance, and not at their own current rates.
The Senate of Romania has adopted a bill aimed at reducing the amounts paid by Romanians for services such as internet, telephony, TV streaming, and car leasing, by eliminating the companies' "own" exchange rates, which are 1-3% higher than the official rate. The initiative, submitted by USR deputy Cezar Drăgoescu, was adopted with 73 votes "for", 39 "against", and one abstention. The bill extends the BNR exchange rate rule to all economic operators, for all contracts in which prices are expressed in foreign currency, from the purchase of cars and homes to external tourist packages, with the declared aim of eliminating unforeseen additional costs for consumers.
The law amends OG 21/1992 regarding consumer protection and explicitly prohibits the application of margins, commissions, or other additional costs above the official rate. For contracts already in progress, merchants will be required, within 90 days of the law coming into force, to conclude additional agreements at no cost to customers.
