Greenpeace Romania presented on Thursday the report 'Territorially Dispersed Energy Systems are Harder to Sustain', highlighting the impact of the attacks in Ukraine on conventional energy capacities.

Between 2022 and 2026, nearly 90% of coal and gas capacity and 50% of hydroelectric capacity have been destroyed. In this context, the organization held the debate 'From Instability to Energy Security: Change Begins at the Local Level', emphasizing that large power plants are particularly vulnerable. Vlad Cătună from Greenpeace stated that real energy security comes from the ability of communities to produce and manage energy locally.

Ana Otilia Nuțu added that a centralized system amplifies vulnerability in the face of crises. The debate included discussions about the lessons from Ukraine and the opportunities offered by the Just Transition Program for the development of energy communities in Romania. The panels addressed the transformation of mining regions and the benefits of energy efficiency for local budgets.
