The former Minister of Energy, Virgil Popescu, warns that the shutdown of Reactor 1 at Cernavodă due to the low flow of the Danube highlights the vulnerability of the Romanian energy system.

Virgil Popescu, former Minister of Energy, emphasized that the shutdown of Reactor 1 at Cernavodă due to the low level of the Danube highlights the vulnerability of the energy system to hydrological changes.

He stated that water is a strategic resource for electricity production in Romania and called for responsible long-term management of it. Popescu mentioned that, due to the severe drought, Nuclearelectrica has controlled the shutdown of Reactor 1 and is considering shutting down Reactor 2. In this context, he emphasized the need for a rigorous hydrological study before making decisions regarding the Iron Gates III hydroelectric project, to assess the impact on water resources and the irrigation system.

The former minister warned that improper management of resources can generate serious problems and significant long-term costs. The Ministry of Energy assured that the electricity supply is not in danger, with the deficit to be covered by imports.
