Cristian Ghinea, USR senator, stated that the party needs to have its own candidate in the upcoming presidential elections, emphasizing that supporting Nicușor Dan would be a "suicidal" choice. Ghinea explained that the current president has ignored the expectations of his electorate, which would severely affect the image of USR. Although he is no longer part of the party's leadership, he insisted that USR has no moral obligation to support a candidate who does not reflect the wishes of the voters.
Additionally, Ghinea discussed public pressure in the context of a possible suspension of Nicușor Dan, mentioning that, although he does not believe there are grounds for suspension, public anger could influence political decisions. In the past, USR supported Nicușor Dan in the 2025 elections, but Ghinea suggests that new support could lead to the party deserting its role of representing the voters.
