Traian Băsescu, former president of Romania, warned that any potential administrative intervention to cap fuel prices could have negative effects on supply, including the risk of a shortage in the market.

In a broadcast on Digi24, Băsescu explained that the fuel reserves built in the past, at lower prices, are being replaced at current costs, which drives up prices as the global market becomes more expensive. He emphasized that capping prices would discourage operators from bringing petroleum products to Romania, which would lead to a certain shortage. Although he mentioned that Romania is not facing supply issues with fuel, Băsescu pointed out that real difficulties could arise at the level of refineries, many of which are under maintenance. He also expressed greater concerns regarding electricity production, suggesting that the closure of some coal capacities should have been postponed. Băsescu stated that Romania has options to avoid fuel shortages, including imports from various sources.
