A possible ban on US diesel exports could raise fuel prices in Romania by approximately 0.51–1.20 lei per litre, according to an analysis by the Intelligent Energy Association. The measure is currently only a proposal, not an adopted decision.
The scenario comes at a time when the European market is already under pressure from disrupted supplies from the Middle East and reduced Russian exports. European diesel prices have doubled since the beginning of the year, while refineries are operating close to maximum capacity.
The European Union has become dependent on US diesel after abandoning imports from Russia. The United States accounts for approximately 32% of diesel imports from outside the EU, while in Northwestern Europe the share reaches around 57%. France and the United Kingdom are among the most exposed countries.
According to the Intelligent Energy Association, a ban lasting several months could increase wholesale prices by $15–35 per barrel. In Romania, diesel could initially become approximately 0.51 lei more expensive per litre, and if the restriction persists while alternatives remain insufficient, the price could rise by up to 1.20 lei. European stocks could prevent an immediate shortage, but not price pressures.
