Diesel fuel in Romania could become up to one leu more expensive per liter if the U.S. stops exports

The price of diesel in Romania could rise by up to one leu per liter over the next two to three weeks if the United States decides to halt diesel exports. The estimate comes from Dumitru Chisăliță, president of the Intelligent Energy Association, who warns that the measure would quickly affect the European market and, subsequently, pump prices.

Europe is trying to persuade the US administration to abandon any potential ban. According to the expert, halting exports would affect approximately 5% of global demand and add new pressure to a market already facing multiple crises.

Until August, Europe imported approximately 540,000 barrels of diesel per day from the United States. Subsequently, the volume fell by around 350,000 barrels per day, a development that may have already contributed to higher European prices. The complete disappearance of this volume would represent approximately 22% of Europe's direct imports and 8% of daily demand.

Chisăliță estimates that European prices could rise by 10–12% over two to three weeks. In Romania, the increase could be approximately 50 bani per liter or, in exceptional circumstances, up to one leu. Diesel has already reached the threshold of 10 lei per liter, and the indicated scenario could push the price toward 12 lei.
