An oversight team sent by Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu to the National Meteorological Administration identified luxury spending in 2025 and 2026 made with five official institution cards. The purchases included clothing, underwear, perfumes, cosmetics, handbags, footwear, decorations and ornamental flower pots.
According to the report presented by the minister, clothing items and accessories worth 85,290 lei were purchased in 2025, along with 119,750 lei worth of perfumes, 11,666 lei worth of cosmetics and nearly 39,000 lei worth of air fresheners. Smartwatches, floral arrangements and ornamental flower pots were also paid for. In 2026, other clothing items and accessories cost more than 111,000 lei, while cosmetics and perfumes exceeded 26,000 lei.
Diana Buzoianu announced that she would forward the documents to the Prosecutor General’s Office and called for the resignation of ANM director Elena Mateescu. Mateescu maintains that the institution had previously conducted an internal audit and that, on August 12, 2026, it notified the Bucharest Capital Police of possible irregularities. The investigation is ongoing.
