Elena Mateescu, director of the National Meteorological Administration (ANM), denies any direct involvement in the irregularities reported at the institution and says she ordered internal checks and referred the matter to the police. The reaction comes after accusations by Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu regarding expenses and purchases deemed unjustified.
Mateescu says she did not use the institutional card, which she claims has been inactive since it was issued, and that she did not approve purchases of clothes, perfume, footwear or cosmetics. According to her, following a preliminary audit, ANM notified the competent authorities on August 12, 2026, regarding possible unlawful acts.
The director says the checks concern purchases made by the central and regional structures, as well as the correlation of national and European projects with timesheets and payments. She states that the furniture purchases were intended to equip an agrometeorological center, while the purchases of IT equipment were carried out by the specialized service.
The Environment Minister accused ANM of making direct purchases worth millions of lei, including toners, laptops and furniture, and called for the director's resignation. Mateescu denounces a political campaign intended to remove her from office.
