A federal jury in California has determined that Apple owes $634 million to Masimo, a company specializing in medical technology, for infringing a patent related to blood oxygen measurement technology used in the Apple Watch. The jury found that the training features and heart rate notifications of the Apple Watch violated Masimo's intellectual property rights. Apple has announced that it will contest the verdict, noting that Masimo has filed numerous lawsuits in recent years, most of which have been dismissed. The patent in question expired in 2022 and pertains to older technologies. The conflict between the two companies has led to a temporary import ban on certain Apple Watch models, and Apple has modified the technology to avoid this ban. Additionally, the U.S. International Trade Commission has opened a new procedure to assess the status of the updated models. Masimo considers the verdict an important victory, while Apple obtained a symbolic verdict in Delaware for other patents.
