The company Meta, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has been fined 567 million dollars by a judge in the United States for failing to inform the public about the risks that its platforms pose to children. The decision was made following a lawsuit filed in 2023 by the state of New Mexico, which accused Meta of exposing children to explicit sexual material and sexual predators.

The judge compared the company to a factory, where advertising and content are the product, and the harm caused is represented by the exploitation and psychological damage to children. In addition to the significant fine, Meta has been ordered to stop sending notifications to minors during the school year and to impose a usage limit of 90 hours per month on its platforms. Meta has announced that it will contest this decision.
