Around 50 MEPs called on the European Commission on Thursday to require Meta to implement in the European Union the child-protection measures it agreed to in the United States. The lawmakers say European minors should not receive weaker protection than American minors.

Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, reached an agreement in August covering approximately 50 U.S. states and territories, worth $17 billion. Under the deal, the company committed to limit social media use to two hours a day for people under 18 and to block their access between midnight and 6:00 a.m. The restrictions can be relaxed only by a parent.

The agreement is valid only in the participating U.S. jurisdictions and does not create international precedents. The MEPs, led by French lawmaker Stephanie Yon-Courtin, asked European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to secure a similar commitment for the EU.

The request comes after Brussels preliminarily concluded in July that features such as infinite scrolling, autoplay, push notifications and personalized recommendations can be addictive and may harm users’ mental health. The Commission says Meta has not yet proposed satisfactory measures. The company faces a fine of up to 6% of its global turnover, potentially more than €11 billion.
