A court in New Mexico has ordered Meta, the company known at the time of the events as Facebook, to pay $25 billion to local users after a jury found that the company had misled them in connection with the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

The jury found 43 million individual violations of local law and set a penalty of $5,000 for each offense. Although the calculation would have exceeded $200 billion, the judge reduced the final amount to $25 billion. The decision represents one of the largest penalties recently imposed against a company.

The case dates back to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which erupted after the consulting firm obtained information from millions of Facebook accounts. The data was used to create political messages intended to support Donald Trump's campaign in the presidential election in the United States.

The court justified the sanction by citing the extraordinary number of violations, the duration and repeated nature of the conduct, as well as the involvement of the company's leadership.

Meta has not yet commented on the decision.

The company is also facing other significant penalties, including one of $1 billion for misleading users and one of $17.1 billion, together with YouTube and TikTok, for exposing children to risks.
