A group of 35 airlines has asked European Union officials to reconsider the planned reforms regarding passenger rights, especially compensation for flight delays. They argue that the increase in fuel prices, caused by the war in Iran, affects their ability to bear new financial burdens. Current regulations allow passengers to request compensation for delays of over three hours, with amounts starting from 250 euros. Discussions on the reforms are scheduled for June 2, and the companies are requesting a pause for reevaluation.

The European Parliament wants to maintain the three-hour threshold, while member states propose increasing it to four hours. Smaller airlines, affected by rising jet fuel prices, are calling for adjustments to the compensation regime to reflect operational realities and avoid eliminating essential air links. They emphasize the importance of regional aviation for Europe's connectivity. Other regulations, such as providing a free seat for companions of persons with reduced mobility, are not contested.
