The European Parliament approved on Tuesday the new rules regarding air passenger rights in the European Union, with 646 votes in favor, 12 against, and three abstentions.
These rules update the regulation from 2004, facilitating a faster process for compensation for delayed or canceled flights. Passengers will be able to choose between a refund of the ticket cost or rerouting to their destination in case of cancellation.
Compensations remain unchanged, ranging from 250 to 600 euros, depending on the flight distance. Airlines will not pay compensation in cases of extraordinary circumstances. The new rules simplify compensation claims, and passengers will be able to carry one personal item for free.
Additionally, families will be seated together without extra costs. The agreement must also be approved by the Council of the European Union to come into force, and member states will have one year for implementation.
