Sozopol, now one of Bulgaria's most popular resorts, traces its origins to an ancient settlement that stretched towards the island of St. Kirik. Its modern name comes from Greek and means 'City of Salvation'. In the first millennium BC, Sozopolis was called Apollonia Pontica, after the great Greek sun god Apollo. The city became an important port center, home to an imposing temple dedicated to Apollo and a 13-meter-high bronze statue of Apollo, which was later stolen by the Romans.
