On the Bulgarian coast of the Black Sea, pollution with tar persists, with cases reported almost daily in areas such as Rezovo, Sinemoreț, and Lozeneț. Authorities claim that the pollution comes from old deposits, but environmental experts are calling for a thorough investigation, including into commercial ships and the Russian fleet.
Residents first noticed black residues on the beaches around June 18, and cleaning efforts have not been successful in the long term. The Ministry of Environment has confirmed receiving several complaints and has instructed local authorities to clean the affected areas.
Although the Maritime Administration claims there is no active pollution, environmental organizations, such as Greenpeace, remain skeptical and are calling for chemical analyses of the pollutant and inspections of ships in the area. Hristo Panchev from Greenpeace emphasized the importance of identifying the source of the pollution to prevent future incidents.
