Lewis Hamilton criticized Formula 1's decision to reduce the standard race distance from 305 to 290 kilometers starting in 2027 and said that drivers should compete in longer races. The Ferrari driver believes that, physically, the cars are easier to drive than in the past, while many races involve a single pit stop and are not demanding enough.
The seven-time world champion also challenged the introduction of a Sprint race in Monaco starting with the 2027 season. Hamilton said that such a race "makes no sense" on the street circuit where overtaking is very difficult and argued that the Grand Prix needs a different format, rather than applying the same structure used at the other rounds.
Formula 1 is meanwhile preparing for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, scheduled for Saturday in Baku due to a national day of commemoration. Kimi Antonelli leads the standings after 14 rounds with 292 points, followed by George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who is in third place with 191 points.
