Formula 1 had previously announced the signing of a 10-year agreement to organize the Rwandan Grand Prix, with the race set to join the calendar from the 2030 season. The announcement was presented as a return after 37 years of absence, the last African round having been the 1993 South African Grand Prix, while Rwanda was set to become the third country on the continent to host an F1 race, after Morocco and South Africa.
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton criticized Formula 1's decisions for 2027: reducing the standard race distance from 305 to 290 kilometers and introducing the Sprint race in Monaco, saying it would not make sense on a street circuit where overtaking is very difficult.
