Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time Formula 1 world champion, says he intends to continue racing beyond the age of 45 in order to have the chance to compete in a race in Africa. The 41-year-old Briton made the comments ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix and claims he is different from the other drivers in the history of the competition.
Formula 1 has signed a 10-year contract with Rwanda, beginning in the 2030s. The race is expected to be the first held on the African continent since 1993, and Hamilton would be at least 45 years old by then.
The Ferrari driver rejected the idea that getting older automatically reduces his performance, saying his reaction time was recently better than that of some younger competitors. However, he said he would continue only as long as he could compete at the highest level.
Hamilton is currently battling for second place in the drivers’ standings alongside four other competitors, behind leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes. After a difficult first season at Ferrari, the Briton secured a victory this year at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona-Catalunya.
