Formula 1 announced on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, that it had signed a 10-year agreement to host the Rwandan Grand Prix, a race that will join the competition’s calendar in the 2030 season. The decision marks Formula 1’s return to Africa after 37 years, with the last race on the continent being the 1993 South African Grand Prix.
The announcement was made through the competition’s social media platforms. “Formula 1 is returning to Africa after a 10-year agreement was signed for a race in Rwanda,” F1 representatives said.
Rwanda, a country located in the central-eastern part of the African continent, will become the third African country to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix, after Morocco and South Africa. The Moroccan Grand Prix was held in 1957 and 1958.
South Africa hosted 27 official races at East London and Kyalami during the periods 1962–1963, 1965–1980, 1982–1985 and 1992–1993. Rwanda’s addition to the calendar represents Formula 1’s most significant return to the African continent in the modern era of the competition. The race is scheduled to be held at least for the period covered by the agreement, beginning in 2030.
