The officials of the Spanish football league have announced that, starting with the 2026-2027 season, La Liga will become the first football championship to use balls with built-in sensors.
These balls, equipped with a 25-gram sensor, will measure force and speed, assisting the refereeing team in making decisions. The data will be transmitted to 12 antennas installed in the 20 stadiums, ensuring complete coverage and triangulation of the ball's position.
The ball will transmit signals at a frequency of 560 signals per second, and its position with 100 signals per second. VAR referees have been trained to manage these signals, thus facilitating their work.
Each ball will require a wireless charging station, having a battery life of five hours after a full charge of 90 minutes. The storage unit will include 20 charging stations to keep the balls in optimal condition.
