The major European leagues are calling for a profound reform of FIFA

The Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga called on Friday for fundamental reform of FIFA’s governance, amid the crisis triggered by the failed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project, a commercial company open to private investors. The leagues say the changes are necessary to restore clear boundaries between the responsibilities of the global governing body and to protect disciplinary cases from any political interference.

The call comes after FIFA president Gianni Infantino proposed consulting the federations on reforming the organization. The four leagues, however, believe that superficial or procedural changes are not enough and describe the FFE project as one of the most serious abuses of power in FIFA’s history.

The Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga are proposing the creation of a permanent body representing national federations, leagues, clubs and players from both men’s and women’s football. Any major initiative should be supported by independent analyses, evidence and public impact assessments published before a decision is made.

The leagues are also calling for FIFA’s regulatory role to be separated from its commercial function. Candidates for the presidency of the governing body would be expected to convene a governance convention within the first 100 days of their term. The election is scheduled for March 18, 2027, and Infantino is currently the only candidate. UEFA, CONCACAF and AFC continue to call for his departure, while UEFA is preparing a complaint over “unfair management” and seeking a rival candidate.
