FIFA accuses UEFA of conducting a “smear campaign” against the organization and its leadership, according to documents filed with courts in the United States and reviewed by the German news agency dpa. The conflict between the two federations intensified following the dispute over investment plans promoted by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Last week, UEFA requested documents in several U.S. courts relating to an investment agreement for the marketing of the World Cup, negotiated by FIFA with business partners in the United States and later withdrawn following pressure. The European federation is seeking to obtain evidence that could be used in proceedings before the Swiss courts.
In a letter sent on September 1 to a court in Florida, FIFA claims that UEFA’s actions are presented as mere legal proceedings but serve to continue the campaign against it. FIFA is asking to join the proceedings and is challenging access to information considered confidential.
