Gheorghe Hagi, the greatest Romanian footballer of all time, turns 61 today. He was born in Săcele, Constanța County. He started playing football at the age of 10, at Farul Constanța, the team where he also made his debut in Divizia A at 17. He played for Sportul Studențesc, Steaua București, Real Madrid, Brescia, Barcelona, and Galatasaray.
He was called "the commander", "the king", "the Maradona of the Carpathians". However anyone might have called him, the best description belonged to him, in the documentary Hai, România! "I am not a king, I am not I don’t know how… I am… I have a name, I am called Gică, well and Hagi because I carry the name from my parents and I carry it with pride and I believe that I created it to be respected, to be known by everyone, I don’t need anything else."
