Destanee Aiava, an Australian tennis player of Samoan descent, has announced that she is retiring from competition at the age of 25, describing the sport as having a "racist, misogynistic, homophobic, and hostile" culture. In an Instagram post, Aiava compared tennis to a "toxic boyfriend" and stated that this season will be her last on the circuit. She spoke about online abuse, a phenomenon that affects many players. Aiava criticized the traditional values of the sport, emphasizing that behind them lies a hostile culture towards those who do not conform to the norms. Although grateful for the opportunities provided by tennis, she acknowledged that the sport has affected her health and self-esteem. So far, no official has commented on the allegations.
