The Republic of Moldova declares a state of emergency in the energy and hydrological sectors. Maia Sandu: “The government must prepare plans for different scenarios”

President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, stated that the budget for 2026 already includes funds for the winter months of this year. As for the winter months of 2027, the necessary financial resources are to be provided for in next year's budget.

The Government is also seeking additional sources of funding; however, the total amount needed for compensation cannot yet be estimated. The need will depend on the evolution of gas and energy prices on international markets.

Maia Sandu stated that the compensation mechanism is expected to operate throughout the cold season. The amount of support will be determined based on energy tariffs and the level of vulnerability of each household.

The President recalled that, in previous years, the Republic of Moldova received financial support from external partners for the energy vulnerability fund. The authorities hope to obtain external contributions again in order to support more families.

Details regarding the mechanism for granting compensation and the resources available for the 2026-2027 cold season are to be announced later.
