The initiative to suspend Maia Sandu from the office of president of the Republic of Moldova will not be placed on the Parliament’s agenda, Igor Grosu announced. The speaker of the legislature said the opposition’s document had also been examined from a legal standpoint and that the allegations against the head of state were unfounded.

Grosu said the opposition had the right to initiate the procedure, but accused its signatories of acting on Moscow’s orders. He rejected allegations that Maia Sandu had repeatedly violated the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Moldova, and said the opposition was attributing to the president issues that fall under the government’s responsibility.

The motion was initiated by MP Ion Chicu and signed by all 46 opposition lawmakers. Chicu says the document was officially registered and entered the legislative procedure, which is why he is calling on Grosu to comply with the Constitution and the Parliament’s rules and place it on the agenda.

The signatures exceed the threshold required to initiate the procedure. However, at least 68 votes are needed to suspend the president. Even if all 46 signatories voted in favor, the opposition would still be short 22 votes from the PAS faction. The Presidency said Maia Sandu will continue her term.
