USR and PNL have begun discussions on forming a political alliance to participate in the 2028 local and parliamentary elections, Radu Miruță, USR’s new first deputy chairman, announced on Friday, November 6. The statement was made to the local press in Gorj after the two parties moved into opposition following the investiture of the Niculescu Cabinet.
According to Miruță, the alliance would serve as a counterweight to a potential political rapprochement between PSD and AUR. The USR representative said that discussions had also taken place at the leadership level of the two parties and that preparations for the 2028 elections had already begun.
At this stage, USR and PNL are analyzing the counties where electoral cooperation could work and identifying areas where disagreements over candidacies might arise. The parties’ leaderships are expected to compare these assessments and determine where an agreement is possible.
The plan involves joint or coordinated candidates for mayoral positions, including in county-seat municipalities, as well as for county councils and the Romanian Parliament. The announcement came a few hours after PNL aligned itself with USR’s position on rejecting the political parties law proposed by the Permanent Electoral Authority.
