UDMR parliamentary leader Csoma Botond says the government can be invested only with PSD’s support. The Hungarian party says, however, that it will not support a majority dependent on the votes of extremist parties such as AUR, SOS or POT.

“Only with PSD is it possible,” Csoma Botond said, adding that UDMR will assess the outcome of the negotiations before making a final decision.

PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu criticized Mureșan’s nomination, accusing him of campaigning in Brussels against Romania. The Social Democratic leadership will meet on Monday, September 21, to assess the president’s proposal.

The discussions are taking place amid the possibility of a rotating government. The option put forward by PNL, USR and UDMR provides for a government initially led by a liberal prime minister, followed, midway through 2027, by a PSD prime minister taking over the position. The votes of Social Democratic lawmakers remain essential for the cabinet’s investiture.
