UDMR President Kelemen Hunor announced Tuesday evening that the Hungarian party will support in Parliament the government proposed by PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan. The decision was made after internal discussions within the UDMR, but the cabinet could not pass with only the votes of the PNL, USR, and UDMR.
According to the calculations presented by Kelemen Hunor, the three parties would provide 171 votes: 81 from the PNL, 59 from the USR, and 31 from the UDMR. The number could reach 188 if the minorities' group supports the government and approximately 208 by attracting unaffiliated lawmakers.
Siegfried Mureșan is due to discuss the governing program and support for the cabinet with the PSD and representatives of the minorities. Kelemen Hunor stated that the program has not yet been finalized, and negotiations regarding the ministries and the names of the ministers have not begun among the three parties.
The UDMR leader rejected the idea that Mureșan's designation was merely a formal proposal by the PNL and described the procedure as “atypical.” The governing program and the list of ministers are expected to be presented to Parliament by Friday evening at the latest, and the government would have a maximum two-year mandate.
”Today, following the discussions within the UDMR, we reached the conclusion that we will go ahead and assume this vote. It is almost ready; rest assured that it will be a very good program. Before the ten-day deadline, on Friday afternoon, by Friday evening at the latest, the governing program and the list of ministers will be in Parliament,” Kelemen Hunor said Tuesday evening on Euronews Romania.
