Former President Traian Băsescu asked the current head of state, Nicușor Dan, to speed up the procedure for appointing a prime minister, amid the political deadlock and the lengthy period during which Romania has not had an operational government.
Traian Băsescu criticized the deadlines set by the president for consultations with the political parties. He said that, if he had been in Nicușor Dan’s place, he would have convened the parties immediately, considering that appointing the prime minister represents a national emergency.
The former head of state said that he would no longer be surprised by any decision Nicușor Dan might make regarding the leadership of the Executive. In his view, the president might try to appoint a prime minister from the PSD, given that the political deadlock continues.
“Speaking very openly about consulting the political parties, now, I am not lecturing anyone, but if I had been the president of Romania, with the country in the situation it is in now, that is, without an operational government for five months, I think I would have announced from Prague that I would land at 10:00 p.m. and meet with the parties at midnight. The deadlock exists, but my opinion is that the president will try to appoint someone from the PSD,” the former president said in an interview with B1TV.
