Traian Băsescu states that Romania will have a government with full powers within no more than 10 days, after President Nicușor Dan appoints a new prime minister. The statement was made on Digi24, amid the consultations at Cotroceni regarding the formation of the future executive.
The former president believes that the new government will have to quickly adopt the next budget rectification. The funds allocated at the beginning of the year for salary payments and the operation of institutions are running out, and the rectification is necessary to cover expenses. A draft rectification in Parliament could be affected, according to Social Democratic sources cited by Mediafax, by amendments.
Băsescu argues that the future executive will also have to prepare a credible budget for 2026. He criticized the method by which interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan sought to reduce the deficit, particularly the tax increases, which he says harmed the economy.
Regarding the formation of the government, the former head of state indicated the option of an independent prime minister, supported by ministers proposed by the parties. Nicușor Dan is meeting on Monday with the leaders of the parties and parliamentary groups, and is expected to make the fourth appointment of a prime minister.
