Former President Traian Băsescu claims that the Mureșan Government has only a 1% chance of receiving Parliament’s vote and says that, if political negotiations fail, Romania should hold snap elections. The statements were made in the context of parties trying to form a majority, while the country has been without a government capable of making major decisions for five months.
Băsescu criticized the prolonged period of political uncertainty and said that President Nicușor Dan has the constitutional instruments at his disposal to clarify the situation, either by appointing a functional government or by dissolving Parliament and calling snap elections.
The former head of state rejected the idea that a referral to the Constitutional Court could force the president to dissolve Parliament. According to Băsescu, this is an exclusive power of the head of state, which cannot be assumed by the Court’s judges.
