Traian Băsescu said Tuesday, in a message posted on Facebook, that forming a stable government is difficult under the current political configuration, regardless of whether the executive is led by designated Prime Minister Luca Niculescu or someone else.
The former president identified two possible solutions: a national unity government made up of all the parties that took part in the elections, or an executive resulting from early parliamentary elections.
Băsescu argued that the decision must take the country’s priorities and urgent needs into account, rather than focusing solely on negotiations over the division of positions and ministerial portfolios.
The message comes as Luca Niculescu negotiates with parliamentary parties to identify a governing formula capable of securing Parliament’s vote of confidence. After consultations, the designated prime minister announced that three options were being considered: a political government, a mixed government made up of politicians and technocrats, or a predominantly technocratic executive.
Niculescu said he was optimistic about the negotiations but did not confirm the existence of a certain parliamentary majority. The future government needs at least 233 votes to be sworn in.
