Traian Băsescu, before the consultations at Cotroceni: Sorin Grindeanu is the safest option

Traian Băsescu stated on Wednesday that President Nicușor Dan has two main political options for appointing the future prime minister: Sorin Grindeanu, proposed by the PSD, and Siegfried Mureșan, supported by the PNL, USR, and UDMR. The statements were made ahead of the consultations scheduled for Thursday at Cotroceni Palace with the parliamentary parties, convened to identify the candidate for the position of prime minister.

The former president believes that Grindeanu would be the option with the greatest chances of leading to the formation of a government. His argument is that the PSD has the largest number of votes among the parties involved and could attract additional political support to build a majority.

However, Băsescu emphasized that nominating the PSD leader could come at an image cost for Nicușor Dan. According to him, the president would risk being accused of betraying his own electorate by moving closer to the PSD.

Independent options have also been mentioned publicly, such as Alexandru Nazare, Iulian Stanciu, Luca Niculescu, and Eugen Tomac. The consultations at Cotroceni are expected to clarify the political options before the prime minister is appointed.
