Sorin Grindeanu announces that PSD is ready to form a majority and enter government after four months of political interim rule

PSD President Sorin Grindeanu stated on Friday that the party is prepared to form a parliamentary majority and enter government, amid a political crisis that has lasted four months. The social-democrat leader argued that Romania urgently needs a government with full powers, against the backdrop of declining consumption and mounting pressures on the population and the economy. Grindeanu cited data published by the National Institute of Statistics, according to which sales fell by nearly 6% in the first seven months of the year. He said that Romanians are buying less, including food, while families are giving up products and services they could previously afford.

The PSD leader criticized the prolongation of political negotiations and disputes between the parties over the formation of a majority. While PNL and USR are discussing the lack of the 233 votes needed, Romania remains without a clear governmental outlook, Grindeanu argued. PSD has presented its governing priorities and is set to discuss with social partners ways to identify measures to overcome the crisis. Grindeanu conveyed that the party will not remain “on the sidelines” and is prepared to build the majority needed to govern.
