Sorin Grindeanu said Thursday that the PSD is prepared to help overcome the current political period, but only under conditions accepted by all the parties involved. The Social Democratic leader called for the formation of a clear parliamentary majority to support the government proposed by designated Prime Minister Luca Niculescu and take responsibility for the Executive’s decisions.
Grindeanu appealed especially to the PNL and UDMR, saying that, together with the PSD, they had played an important role in governments since 2012. He warned that Romania must avoid a disastrous scenario and argued that there can be no situation in which one party assumes responsibility while another tries to gain political advantage.
The Social Democrat pointed out that securing the 233 votes needed to invest a government is not enough without a transparent and stable majority. In this context, he cited Dacian Cioloș’s technocratic government, installed with broad parliamentary support in 2015 but later criticized by the parties that had supported it.
The statements were made after the first day of consultations between the designated prime minister and the parliamentary parties. The PNL ruled out joining the government, particularly alongside the PSD, while the UDMR said it could support the Executive without being part of it.
