PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan stated on Sunday, October 11, that the liberals' objective after the 2028 parliamentary elections is to form a majority without PSD and AUR. He maintains that this would be the only formula through which Romania could be modernized “truly.”
The statement comes amid tensions between PNL and PSD. Mureșan previously stated that the two parties are “in total opposition” and that there is no basis for responsible parliamentary cooperation. The liberal accused PSD of trying to create the impression of shared objectives with PNL, although the Social Democrats' actions over the past year would demonstrate the opposite.
In response, PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu stated that his party supports rebuilding a stable majority alongside PNL and UDMR and is prepared to assume governing responsibilities.
Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu criticized this position, recalling that PSD contributed to the dismissal, five months ago, of the government in which it had served alongside the liberals.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister-designate Luca Niculescu continues negotiations to form a majority. On Monday, he is due to meet with representatives of USR, the Group of National Minorities, and the PACE-First Romania group.
