Designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan said on Wednesday that he does not support splitting the governing mandate between the PNL and the PSD and that he is prepared to lead until the end of the legislative term, in 2028. He said Romania needs political stability, given that approximately two years remain until the scheduled parliamentary elections.
Mureșan explained that a rotation would further shorten the mandate of the future government and deepen instability. Over the past 20 years, Romania has had 13 prime ministers, while in the last decade there have been nine heads of government, the designated prime minister said.
The liberal leader ruled out the possibility of the PNL and PSD governing together, but said he did not reject the possibility of the two parties governing successively. Nevertheless, his preference is for Romania to have a single executive until 2028, after the two governments formed during the current legislative term.
Mureșan also said that, in any potential talks with the PSD and the other parties, the essential criterion for the PNL will be the governing agenda and the measures proposed for Romania.
