EPP/PNL MEP Siegfried Mureșan says Romania must strengthen its relationship with the United States both by cooperating with the Donald Trump administration, which will remain in office until 2029, and by engaging in dialogue with the new Democratic majority in Congress.
In a Facebook post, Mureșan says Democrats have won a majority in both chambers of Congress, while Donald Trump remains president but will have to negotiate with the legislature to pass laws and the budget. The MEP considers the result important for Romania because Congress approves funding for defense and support for Ukraine and oversees decisions that influence the country’s security.
According to Mureșan, cooperation with the new majority could help maintain the U.S. military presence on the Eastern Flank and continue defense investments, including in the Black Sea region. He also advocates expanding trade and attracting U.S. investment in energy, technology, and the defense industry.
The MEP says Romania’s foreign policy must pursue national interests regardless of political changes in Washington. He estimates that the election result will also influence the debate in Romania ahead of the 2028 elections.
