Victor Negrescu argues that Romania must strengthen its relations with both Democrats and Republicans following the Democrats’ victory in the elections for the United States Senate and House of Representatives. The MEP and first vice president of the PSD draws attention to the fact that the change in congressional majorities has direct implications for Romania’s security and interests.
“Congress passes legislation and approves federal budgets, the Senate confirms numerous important appointments, and parliamentary majorities can influence foreign policy, defense, and economic priorities. For Romania, the stakes are higher than they may seem at first glance. We are talking about financing European security, the American military presence, support for the Eastern Flank, Black Sea security, and trade relations between the United States and the European Union,” the Social Democratic leader wrote on Facebook.
Negrescu criticizes the politicians and commentators in Bucharest who, in his view, have taken overly partisan positions and are changing their rhetoric following the election results. He states that influence in Washington is built through consistent relations with both parties, members of Congress, the administration, and representatives of the American states.
The official emphasizes that the Romanian-American strategic partnership must remain above electoral cycles, and that the political change in Washington must be turned into concrete opportunities for Romania’s security, economy, and international influence.
