PNL MEP Rareș Bogdan criticized, on Tuesday, on the “Ai Aflat!” program on Gândul, the party’s rapprochement with USR, supported by liberal leader Ilie Bolojan. He argued that this direction is alienating the PNL’s conservative and traditionalist electorate and reducing the party’s chances of achieving a significant electoral score.
“I believe that every day Ilie Bolojan continues to remain in the Modrogan Palace and lead the party closer to USR is a lost day for the liberal electorate and for Romania. I believe it narrows the chances that this alliance which he, or the PNL, wants to build will receive more than one-fifth of the total number of those who turn out to vote,” Bogdan stated.
In his argument, Rareș Bogdan said that the Romanian electorate cannot be compared with that of Western cities such as Amsterdam or Berlin. He argued that USR is not representative of Romanian traditions or of the electorate close to the Orthodox Church, national history, and conservative values.
The MEP also accused Ilie Bolojan of having blocked American investments in Romania and of contributing to the increase in the tax burden. These claims were not accompanied, in the information presented, by details regarding the projects or contracts referred to. The disagreements reflect tensions within the PNL regarding the party’s direction and its relationship with USR.
