Acting Minister of Internal Affairs Cătălin Predoiu announced on Thursday that he would vote for the government proposed by designated Prime Minister Siegfried Mureșan if it reaches Parliament. Predoiu says Romania urgently needs a pro-Western government with full powers and argues that rebuilding the political coalition could have been possible as early as four months ago.
The statement was made in a Facebook post after Mureșan presented the main measures in his governing program. These include establishing a single national police force and creating a single state service point for services intended for citizens.
Predoiu interpreted the proposal as a possible abolition of local police forces and their integration into the Romanian Police. He noted that the Romanian Police already has general national jurisdiction, while local police forces are subordinate to local administrations. The acting minister said he would support the initiative in discussions with mayors’ organizations.
Regarding digitalization, Predoiu mentioned that the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ HUB has approximately 1.49 million accounts and 63.6 million visits, providing online access to several public services.
